Ocean Isle Inn

by Jennifer James

Last month my family and I headed down to Ocean Isle Inn in our home state, North Carolina, as guests of the property. If there is one thing to say about traveling to the beach off-season is there is hardly anyone around. I love that!

Located oceanfront, Ocean Isle Inn gives families the opportunity to spend ample time at the beach as it is just feet away from the property. It also has an outdoor and indoor pool as alternative options to the ocean.

There were several things I liked about Ocean Isle Inn like their fast Wi-Fi connection. As someone who owns a digital business I cannot experience any downtime when I am traveling. Their Internet connection was stellar.

I also liked that the housekeeping staff was perfectly fine just giving us new towels and taking our trash every day. Oftentimes when I travel I get annoyed by housekeepers who insist and insist upon cleaning my room when really all I want is to relax. So, for that, I was very appreciative.

Ocean Isle Inn is located away from the hustle and bustle of Myrtle Beach, but is close enough to visit to see the tourist sights and eat at a fancy restaurant if that’s what you’re looking for.

Each room has a comfortable size balcony where you can sit and listen to the ocean if you want to relax to the sounds of the waves instead of getting in the water. The balcony was perfect for us because even though it was warm out the water was a little too cold.

In Ocean Isle there are many things to do as a family from putt-putt, to visiting the planetarium, to going out on a chartered boat ride.

As a seasoned traveler, I recommend Ocean Isle Inn as a family destination if you’re on a tight budget. You’re going to get the luxury of the ocean, beautiful sunrises and sunsets as it is facing due south, and the inn staff is very cordial and accommodating.  Additionally, there is a grocery store on the island and a bigger one right over the bridge so you don’t have to pay a fortune eating out if it’s not in your budget.

Panera Baking in Tribeca

by Jennifer James

Last month I made a quick trip to New York for a meeting and for an amazing event with Panera Bread*. If you saw the #PaneraBaking hashtag floating around Twitter in October, here’s what all the buzz was about.

Tom Gumpel, Panera Bread’s Head Baker, former associate dean at the Culinary Institute of America, and Captain of the 1999 U.S. Baking Team that captured the grand prize at the prestigious Coupe du Monde de la Boulangerie (World Cup of Baking), was on hand to teach us parent bloggers a thing or two or three about bread.

I learned there is such a thing as bread pairing. I though that was reserved for wine and cheese. I also learned that some bread just calls for butter and cheese, diets be damned! And, I also learned that walking into Cooking by the Book in Tribeca when bread is being baked is nothing short of heaven on earth.

I also received a $25 gift card to Panera Bread that I am giving away. Leave a comment to win. A random drawing will be made on November 30, just in time to receive it for yourself or a great stocking stuffer!

* I worked with a PR team to invite parent bloggers to the Panera Bread event.
