[Travel Thursday] My Number One Travel Tip for Moms

by Jennifer James

San Francisco Pier 39

I have learned quite a bit from traveling a lot. Last year I had a very crazy travel schedule. This year I vowed that I would not travel nearly that much unless I was traveling to an event, meeting, or conference that I just couldn’t miss. Last year it was go-go-go. This year I’ll be hopping on a plane, but only when absolutely necessary.

Which brings me to my number one travel tip for moms and anyone else for that matter.

Always get adequate sleep before traveling!

That was my biggest problem last year — not sleeping before travel. I packed all night and then hopped on a plane in the morning and by noon I was a wreck and my body felt like it. Repeat that for an entire year and you will feel miserable by December. Trust me!

And my number two tip when flying: Always make sure to drink water instead of soda, juice, wine or alcohol. Your body will thank you for that.

What are your best travel tips especially when you’re flying?

[Foodie Tuesday] Vegan Option for Coffee Creamer

by Jennifer James

For the past two months I have been a vegan and have been loving it even though I have had a few dairy lapses here and there. What I’ve learned is this: milk is in almost everything which makes the vegan transition a little difficult at first! Buying foods that don’t contain milk can be frustrating, but it’s also fun finding dairy alternatives!

While shopping at Whole Foods I found a non-dairy coffee creamer (because you know I need my coffee!) called So Delicious. It comes in original, hazelnut and French vanilla and is also soy-free for those of you who are allergic to soy or just don’t like it. Typically if you want a dairy free alternative you turn instinctively to soy, but you don’t have to all of the time. So Delicious is made from coconut milk. Honestly, it took a few cups of drinking it to please my taste buds, but eventually it tasted  really good to me and now I can’t live without it.

Is there a non-dairy creamer you love?

[Must-Have Monday] Coach’s Spring Collection

by Jennifer James

A few years ago at Blogher ’09 I splurged and bought my first-ever “not department store” purse at the Coach store in Chicago’s WaterTower Place on Michigan Avenue. I bought a beautiful, classic black Coach handbag that I still love carrying even though it’s a couple of seasons old. At the time it was the most expensive item I had ever purchased for myself and upon buying it I experienced the requisite heart palpitations that many women get who aren’t used to buying nice things for themselves.

Fast forward two years and now it’s not so hard to do nice things for myself although it still takes a lot of inner convincing.

After buying that black handbag from Coach I always receive nice, little goodies in the mail from them like really great discount cards to buy new handbags. The latest discount card will save me $100 off the purchase of a new handbag. What a smart marketing move. Now, how can I pass that up?

My favorite Coach collection is the Kristin collection. I absolutely adore it! I haven’t purchased anything special for myself in quite sometime. I think it’s time to revisit the Coach store and buy something snazzy from their Kristin spring collection. What do you think?

[Foodie Tuesday] Kashi’s Vegan Options

by Jennifer James

As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, Eating Vegan on the Disney Dream, my family and I have been vegan for about a month or so. The reason we are now vegan is because of this one book. Yoga and Vegetarianism really changed our life and way of eating.

As a vegan you have to really read labels. I found out the hard way that even if you buy vegetable soup oftentimes it is made with chicken stock. You can’t just eat any and every thing. We have found ourselves shopping exclusively at Whole Foods because it’s just easier to find foods that match our lifestyle if we buy canned or bottled foods. You would be surprised what companies put in salad dressings, even Italian that you would assume is just vinegar, oil, and spices. Nope!
